Diving is one of the most practiced sports in the world, being very safe and easy to learn. The coast of Santa Catarina offers good conditions for snorkeling and deep diving (scuba diving), and some local destinations are globally known.
The main scuba diving location is near the Archipelago of Arvoredo, located 11Km north of Florianópolis. It is environmentally protected by law and by the classification of Marine Biological Reserve. On the site it is possible to find important archaeological sites, and therefore the disembarking of tourists is not allowed.
Are part of the archipelago the Islands of Galés, Cacau, São Pedro, Deserta e Arvoredo. There are excellent diving opportunities in Lajes, like the Noccetti Stone, with a depth of 10 meters, which is perfect for beginners and free divers, as well as the freighter Lili, sunk in 1958.
Due to the fact that in the region happens meeting of the tropical and subtropical currents that bathe the entire Brazilian coast, it is possible find examples of the typical fauna of hot water, and also animals that are common in cold regions, such as fur seals, penguins and whales.
The most common kinds of diving are the freediving and the autonomous diving. The freediving (or apnea) is the mode in which the diver does not use any equipment for underwater breathing. In autonomous diving, the diver is aided by equipment, that allows him to breathe underwater.
The modality known as 'snorkeling' is also very popular. Snorkeling allows the participant to see aquatic species while floating in the water, using a diving mask and snorkel - therefore without the need for the oxigen cylinder. Thus, it is possible to enjoy the underwater view without getting the face out of the water to breathe!
