One of the best sights of Sri Lanka, still little known to most tourists, is the Wilpattu National Park.
It is located on the island of Sri Lanka, 30 km west of Anuradhapura, 26 km north of Puttalam and 180 km north of Colombo. The park's biggest attractions are the natural lakes, or “willus”, which are depressions that fill with rainwater.
You can find nearly sixty lakes and tanks spread throughout the National Park, the largest and one of the oldest National Parks in the country.
For those who have already visited national parks in Africa, visiting the Wilpattu National Park may be a bit boring, but for those who love animals and have never had the opportunity to see wildlife up close, it is surely a great place!
The park is not usually crowded, the entrance price is affordable, the guides are super friendly and very knowledgeable. There you can find leopards, elephants, water buffalo, mongoose, crocodiles and many different types of birds, including the Sri-Lankan national bird, the Junglefowl. It is surely worth the visit!
